Robert J. Loney

Robert “Bob” James Loney passed away peacefully in Upland on March 6, 2004. He took his last breath surrounded by his wife, his two children, son-in-law and two of his grandchildren.

A California native, Bob was born in Riverside October 23, 1930. He graduated from Pomona High School in 1948. He served in the Navy for four years during the Korean War as an electrician on an aircraft carrier.

Bob attended Anderson College (now Anderson University), and graduated with a
B.A. in 1956. He met his wife, Cathy Bailey, at Anderson College. They wed on June 15, 1954. He received his M.A. from Claremont Graduate School in 1962.

His teaching career spanned almost a half century. He completed his teaching career from 1958 - 2000 at Upland High School. He coached a variety of sports, including Track and Cross Country Varsity as head coach at Upland High School from 1966 - 2000. His accomplishments included 34 Cross Country and Track League Championships, eight CIF Runner-up Titles, and four CIF Championships.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Cathy Loney; and two children, Jim Loney and his wife Susan, and Karen Loney Nightingale and her husband Tom; and five grandchildren, Christina, Nick and Monica Loney and Lauren and Tommy Nightingale, and countless students to whom he was a mentor.

A celebration of his life will be held 1 p.m., Sunday, March 14, 2004 at Hillside Community Church, 5354 Haven Avenue, Alta Loma.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Robert J. Loney Scholarship Fund, 4680 Granada Avenue, Riverside, Calif. 92504.

Bob will be remembered as a man who followed God, loved his family, and savored life. He had a wonderful dry sense of humor and was a master motivator. He truly loved people and invested his life helping others believe the best in themselves. He will be remembered as “Coach”.
